St. James The Great Church Roadshow

    Saturday 15th March 2005

Taking part: - Stevie B; Alan Driffield; Joe King; Ross Risdon; & Jonty the magician.

Stevie B opened the show by welcoming the audience, which was a good crowd of parents, children & grandparents. He also thanked the magicians and their families who gave up their time to entertain the audience at Pudsey.

To start the show, Joe King performed a silk routine which involved the disappearance of a silk only to reappear in a playing card. He then showed an empty box and produced a chicken which was hypnotised and made to do strange things the children enjoyed. The final trick from Joe involved a mysterious washing machine that when wound up by the assistant made strange things happen, such as the appearance of holes and the shrinking of socks. The act was very good and was much enjoyed, judging by the laughter of the children.

Stevie then came back out and amazed the children and parents with a flower trick in which the children thought they had figured out the secret only to be fooled again.

The second act was Alan Driffield. He started his act off by teaching the children some magic words - 'umpa umpa' - the childrens response was 'stick it up your jumper'. He then proceeded to find his magic wand in a purse; but the wand was too small, so the magic words were said to make the wand bigger. Alan then did a Jack & the Beanstalk trick which involved three assistants - two giants played by two boys and Jack played by a girl. Jack was tied up and the giants got closer and closer to her, so she magically escaped from the ropes causing them to penetrate her body. Then Alan performed a trick, which involved the assistant choosing the right key for a padlocked box in order to get a prize. The keys were handed out and sure enough the assistant chose the right key to get the prize. Alan's final trick was a clever rope trick in which he made a few ropes magically turn into one. The children loved Alan and he was loudly applauded.

Stevie B closed the first half with his own brand of magic. He did the linking rings but with ropes. This amazed the children. To finish off the first half he brought out a bag which forever turned inside out. He eventually found the centre of the bag and pulled out a balloon so he could make his assistant a souvenir.

Ross Risdon opened the second half performing the routine that he did at the Bradford Magic Circle's annual dinner. This involved a zombie ball, money making production trick and ended with mask productions including old man mask in which Ross was transformed into a magical dancing old man.

Stevie B returned and got an assistant to perform the magic for him by magically penetrating a balloon with a needle, without the balloon bursting.

The final act, Jonty the magician started his show with a troublesome magic wand which kept rising every time his back was turned. He then ` showed the children his mum's birthday present which was a flower, but the head fell off. He tried to fix it, but the flower head appeared on his wand. He vanished the flower and finally it reappeared on the stem. He then got an assistant dressed up as a magician using a comedy bow tie and glasses. All he needed now was a wand for the magician. He got one out but it was too small. So he produced an 8 foot wand from a tiny bag, but it was too big. Finally he found a perfect sized wand, which was blown up and filled with air. He then produced three invisible silks placing one on each arm of the assistant and one in her mouth A box was shown empty and the invisible silks placed inside. The silks became visible and were taken from the box. They then magically blended together. Next Jonty put a very large top hat on the table, showing that it was empty. When he turned his back, rabbit's ears popped out of the hat. The children screamed to tell him about the ears. When Jonty turned round the ears had gone. After this was repeated two or three times, Jonty produced a live rabbit from the hat, which ran up his arm and almost did a somersault over his back (in rehearsal). Stevie B, on hand as per usual, ran across and caught the rabbit to roars of laughter. The children loved Jonty the magician and Bunty the acrobatic rabbit.

The show ended with Stevie B thanking the performers and the audience for making the day fun and entertaining for everyone. Then the organisers from the Church thanked Bradford Magic Circle for a good performance.

    Overall the day was fantastic.
