    Secrets of Magic

    BBC1 Saturday 22 January

Introduced by Nick Knowles, and featuring John Lenahan, Etienne Pradier & Danny Buckler, this programme purported to show how some tricks were done, but then, in the same way as a previous show, largely repeated the tricks to prove that they were not done in the way revealed. I actually enjoyed the show as, whilst it did give away a few secrets, these were hardly earth shattering ones; it really left the persons helping with the magic even more mystified than they were to start with. The previous show had been filmed in a studio with a celebrity panel trying to guess how the effects were done; this one was filmed outdoors using members of the public.

John Lenahan started with a group of lorry drivers. One of the drivers HGV licences was placed on a table inside one truck. Another truck at the side was shown empty. The doors were closed. When the doors were re-opened the table and licence had switched trucks. The explanation was that the table had been moved by remote control into a case at the rear of the truck, whilst another in the second truck made to appear in the same way. The licence was attached to a thread, which pulled it across between the trucks unseen by the lorry drivers. John then repeated the trick by having a small orchestra in one truck. They managed to travel to the other truck whilst the trucks were moving.

Etienne Pradier was shown in a motorway cafe He had lots of cups with spoons in. The spoons kept jumping out, to the amusement of the spectators sat in the cafe. He showed that this was done by having a sugar lump in a bulldog clip in the cup. The spoon was placed resting on top of the clip. When he poured tea on the sugar it melted. The clip closed and caused the spoon to jump. The funniest bit was in the closing credits when it showed many of the outtakes as Etienne tried to get this to work. He was also shown pouring a can of pop into a glass floating in mid-air; opening his book from which a flame rose; and making his table float. None of these were explained.

John Lenahan was in a supermarket. He borrowed £lo from a lady, who signed her name on it. He screwed up the £10 in his hand. It vanished. The lady opened an envelope, which said GO TO TILL 22. The signed £10 was found in that till. The explanation was that Danny had been passing behind the lady and John threw the £10 over her head to him. Danny went to till 22 and paid for 1 item with the £10 so there it was when John went to find it. John then sent the lady on a trolley dash to collect as many items as she could in 1 minute. When she came back John borrowed her credit card and made it vanish. She chose an item from her trolley - a tin of baked beans. She opened the can and found her credit card wrapped in cellophane inside.

Danny Buckler was shown in a bar in Blackpool with the illuminations in the background. He had a light bulb. A lady chose a card and replaced it in the deck whilst Danny's back was turned. Danny placed 6 cards on the bar, and the light bulb found the chosen card by lighting up when over the selected card. The explanation was that the cards had been marked beforehand with luminous paint. Danny stood on an electrical box that allowed 60,000 volts to pass harmlessly through his body to light the bulb.

John Lenahan was in Preston Market. He was stood behind a counter and had a Magic Kettle. Members of the public chose a drink from the board behind John, and he poured it. The explanation was that he had a tube down his sleeve and Danny & Etienne were behind pouring in the requested drink. However, this was then repeated in the open market with John producing any drink requested by the market customers.

Finally Danny was in a horse drawn carriage on the front at Blackpool. An obviously cold evening with the illuminations on. A lady in the carriage with him chose a card. She folded it in half and put it in her jacket pocket. The horse pulled away down the front whilst the lady tried to shake a six on a dice. When she did so, the horse stopped. This was outside the Tower. The Tower lights went out, as did several of the illuminations. Danny and the lady were lifted up towards the bulbs and she chose one of the bulbs. It lit up to reveal the chosen card on it. No explanation was offered.
