A nominal 12 members turned up for the bonfire night event, which, accompanied by the bangs and whizzes of the numerous bonfires in the area, turned out to be an evening enjoyed by all. The thrust of the evening was to perform a trick which had appeared in the Billet. I opened the evening by cheating slightly, in that I performed an Arun Bonerjee trick which has not yet appeared in there. Being the editor, and being in advance of the rest of the membership in reading the magazine, I utilised an effect Arun has produced which he has called, Numero Vision. This involved Stevie B visualising a card and then having the card named and discovered using numerology and Stevie’s name. Afterwards Stevie did tell me that he was impressed by this routine. He didn’t say so, but I also think that it baffled him as to how it was done; so don’t forget, look out for Numero Vision when it does appear in the Billet. Melvyn then did a routine out of the Billet as only he can – he had a copy of the Billet which he opened up to take out 3 envelopes, marked B M & C. Explaining that was to choose a King of the Bradford Magic Circle each letter was to represent one member. B was Stevie B; M was Melvyn; whilst C (would you believe it) stood for Keith! Melvyn showed that there was a picture of the candidate in each of the envelopes. Jean Waite chose a King from the 3 (Melvyn), and Melvyn turned the cards over to show that only that card had written on the back that he, Melvyn, would be crowned King. Charles showed the spooky key, whereby a key held in his hand turned over. This had appeared in an earlier Billet in a slightly different form. Steve Gore performed Jay Sankey’s £20 Change. In this a card was chosen. Steve said that his psychic finger would detect the card and that if he got it wrong, his assistant, Peter, could keep the £20. Steve appeared to choose the wrong card, but it turned into the correct one before peter could walk off with the money. Stevie B performed a Peter Duffie effect based on the Oil & Water principle. Peter Wright found a chosen card in the pack. Brian Waite had Stevie choose a card. He dealt the cards into two piles and eliminated one of the piles. He then redealt the pile left and again removed a pile. He continued this until only one card was left, which was the chosen one. Anthony Heaton had a card chosen and replaced into the pack. Mixing the cards half face up and half face down, he eventually found the chosen card as the only face up one in the pack. Lee Pirie flicked through the pack four times, getting people to shout ‘stop’ each time. When turned over it was found that he had found the four aces. Whilst not all these effects had appeared in the Billet, everybody got up and had a go, which is what magic is all about. The tea break saw everyone tucking into the bonfire toffee which had been brought, and. I think, everyone went home with their teeth still intact! After the tea break the evening meandered on with people demonstrating more, mainly card effects, until they left into the air full of the smell of bonfires and fireworks. |
