Secretarial

So there has been a slight shuffle in the committee and officers following the AGM. First of all, a huge thank you to Colin Gough who at the end of his three years as ex-officio has now stepped off from committee. So too has Ken Mitchell, again with our thanks. Dennis has come onto the committee as President Elect beginning his three years as ex-officio. Mark Waddington has remained on committee, having been co-opted on last year, and has taken on the role of Publicity Officer. Steve Hord has been officially made the Health and Safety adviser, a non-committee post that was adopted into the committee and officers in the Rules and Constitution. The only other change was Gemma Beckett becoming our Welfare Officer. Sincere thanks Angela Gough, for serving in that capacity for a number of years. One final acknowledgement of gratitude is to Jules Mullins who recorded the minutes, with some prompts from Paul Sunderland, as to who said what. This allowed me to take a more active role during the meeting.

The meeting was generally pleasant and we were able to cut through the business fairly quickly. One thing that I didn’t particularly care for, were some of the comments from the floor during the meeting. As members, we are all entitled to express our opinions at such meetings on the various issues therein and to that end, our comments should be accepted in the same vain. Civility is not an unreasonable thing to ask for or expect to receive.

Other things now and following on from the success of our last visit to Clayton Village Hall, our return visit was also well received. Hopefully, that will help establish it as another regular venue for our Roadshow. What I did appreciate was the support from members in the audience. Supporting the cast of Keith Pickles, Joe King, Alex Stephenson, Stevie B., Colin Gough, Godfrey Shackleton and Mark Waddington were Phil Howarth, Ernest Ainley with a colleague from Brighouse (David) who regularly supports back stage at the Hey Presto Shows. In the audience were Jean Waite (with a neighbour they’d brought who had a wonderful time), Steve Hord, Dennis Calvert and Paul Sunderland, who was there with Jules. Alex Stephenson’s parents were also there to support the show. A lot of people had also attended from the village and the Circle is £90 better off for the efforts of those involved the show.

A report of the show will be elsewhere, having been submitted by Dennis, with photos courtesy of Steve Hord.

There were a couple of problems with the show in my mind. The main one was that this year, the bar was open during the show’s halves rather that just in the interval. This was discourteous to the performers and to the general audience, as a few visited the bar for various things, distracting the audience. The show in general was well received though in spite of that. A shame though that one of the acts overran by quite a lot, doing seventeen minutes instead of the allotted ten. This resulted with the next act having to cut their act down considerably and still have to race through, to try to get the show back on time. It was good of Godfrey to give up some of his act as we had to leave the room on time as another event was taking place shortly after.

Now just before I go, please remember that the April meeting will be a week later owing to many of us being away at Spring Parade. Of course before that, several of you will have already been to Blackpool, which will at the time of reading be a recent memory. Any chance of a report from one of you in the next magazine? Of course, there may already be one elsewhere as our President and editor (Presitor?) will be one of those attending. As mentioned above, Spring Parade will soon be with us and there will be other magical events taking place throughout the year. I’ll try to keep you up to speed which what’s going on and where.

Among the events of the year, The Order of the Magi may well feature highly, celebrating as they are their centenary. To commemorate this, they have a show taking place on the evening of 28th March at the Waterside Arts Centre in Manchester. The show will feature Amethyst, Brian Sefton, High Jinx and Ward Allen. Tickets are £10, so if you missed your chance to get a ticket to our show in Bingley, or you want to see another show on top of ours, well, you can! Alternatively, or as well as, you could go to The Wizard of Castle Magic, a magical play for children of all ages, which is also taking place as part of their celebrations, this time at The Met, Market Street, Bury on the 28th March. Before those events though, Leeds Magical Association have let me know (as was mentioned at the last couple of meetings) that the Pride of Yorkshire Close-up Competition will be taking place on March 10 the Quaker Meeting House. Acts submitted may perform for up to 12 minutes (card tricks/acts will be permitted) and those entered will be competing for a money prize of £100 (along with their name inscribed on a trophy) and a runner-up prize of £25.

Thanks for reading, see you next time.
