The Billet Article - Secretarial

As the year draws to a close, there are a few things that need mentioning as we fast approach December. The first is the December Show, which is being arranged by Ivan. This meeting, like the contest night is open to family and friends. Volunteers are always welcome whether performing or assisting. At the December meeting (which I should remind you is on the first Friday this year) you have an opportunity to save on the expenditure of posting Christmas cards to friends at the Circle. Many of us bring down our greetings cards to other members and place them on the appropriate pile and at the end of the evening; we each take home our pile of cards.

We then come to our January meeting, which again is open to family and friends. It is possibly our most relaxed meeting of the year, with games and other entertainments usually taking place. As part of the evening, we have a party buffet. To this end, we ask that members bring along with them a little bit of something savoury and something sweet and maybe a drop to drink. It is all put together to make a delightful buffet that’s full of variety. A few of us, those that remember (!) bring to the party night a trick they no longer use or need. Tricks need not be anything too elaborate and certainly not a pack of cards. All the tricks (wrapped up please) are put together and those who bring a trick take a different one home.

We then move onto February and the AGM, possibly the most important evening of the year. Would you like to stand for election to office? We already know from a previous Billet that Keith will be stepping down as our editor. Maybe you’d like to have a crack at it. Do you know somebody who would make a great President? You would need their consent before submitting them as a proposal. The same applies with all other offices. Maybe you’d like to serve on the committee just as a committee member. The committee always welcomes new members and fresh ideas. At the close of the A.G.M. we of course move into our 60th anniversary celebrations.

So that’s what’s happening at the last meetings of the Circle’s year. However, we have a roadshow in January. We have been asked to return to St. James the Great Church in Pudsey, for another family show and while I already have a couple of acts for the show do need some more and mention it here as there may be some who wish to take part. It is an ideal opportunity to further your skills or to put something back into magic and the Circle. As with other events it isn’t just performers we’re after. It’s always easier if we have technical assistance. It’s also nice to have a reporter there for the Billet and in these days of digital cameras, some photos would embellish a report. Look even I can stick my mug in the top corner of this page (in case you were wondering to whom that devilishly handsome face belonged). It’s also nice to have some support from the membership in the audience. So, I hear you all screaming as you check your diaries, what is the date and time of the show? Well it’s on Saturday 12th January and kicks off at 2:30 to finish at about 4:40 with an interval in between. Both halves are stand up and a while it is a family show, an emphasis is put towards the children in the audience. Jugglers and vents are welcome as well.

Back to tonight and I hope you all enjoy Tony Rix’s lecture, I think he last lectured at Bradford as part of our 50th anniversary celebration, presenting his lecture during our very successful one-day convention. Of course, he’s appeared since on our shows and Dinners including last years Dinner.

Speaking of Dinners, I look forward to seeing some of you (all too few, if I’m being honest) at the Dinner on the 9th. For now though, thanks for reading.
