The Bradford Magic Circle was called upon to entertain at the Leeds Magical Association on the 12th March to fill a gap left by a last minute cancellation. Our own President Colin Gough stepped in and organised the evening at very short notice. Stevie B compared the evening introducing the first act, our very hard working PRO Ken Mitchell, who in his very relaxed but inimitable style presented a good sliding red knot on a white rope routine. Just when we were convinced that the knot was fake and tied onto the rope he untied the knot to reveal it was indeed part of the white rope. Ken then continued with his version of cut and restored skipping rope interspersing it with gags. He was the first magician I saw perform this effect and that always gives it an edge. He closed with his version of the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty which suits his style of performance very well. Denis Calvert became a member of the BMC via our allied arts entry method and if any proof that this avenue needs to be kept open then Denis is it. He supports Roadshows as a spectator and performer alike. He entertained with throw away gags in between his juggling. Denis concluded his spot with a colour changing ring routine to music which was very colourful and a good finish. Colin Gough followed with a ring on elastic band routine. Then a pick a card routine in which the chosen card was found in the pack reversed. He closed with an effect he called smash and grab using four polystyrene cups and an extremely dangerous spike. The style in which Colin presented this effect was laid back but at the same time building up tension by explaining how this trick could be seen on the internet and sky drastically going wrong. When the last cup which Colin had to grab was indeed the one that contained the spike Colin said I think I will finish here to the relief of all the audience and very good applause. Stevie B concluded the first half of the evening with his own version of torn and restored newspaper which he explained the workings of. This proved to be very interesting to all present with many saying how good it was and for me worth the journey to Leeds. |
