Members of the Bradford Magic Circle put on a superb afternoon's entertainment for the full house at St James' Church at Pudsey on Saturday 17th January 2004. Stevie B had the job of compering the show, introducing the acts of Keith Pickles, Joe King, Lauren Stringwell and Geoff Robertshaw. Stevie showed several tricks between acts, including an amusing unequal rope routine with a silver sceptre and a needle through a balloon. But the pick for me was a dice production. Stevie explained that he had been given the prop from the late Bob Eaton's widow, Vera. He also told the audience that Bob had been responsible for getting the roadshows up and running many years ago. Keith was the first act on. He had the audience in stitches, with the help of a very young volunteer. Keith started with an amusing little routine with a pair of gloves, with one glove that was supposed to disappear; needless to say Keith played on the trick going wrong but finished with a great ending. After a little funny routine with a balloon, Keith performed a Humpty Dumpty jigsaw trick, an item with Little Riding Hood, and finished with Pieces of Eight, a pirate trick where he had three volunteers dressing up for their parts. A very good start to the show. Brian Waite, alias Joe King, was up next with a puppet called Spiky. Joe finished with a washing machine trick, where several different sized socks are changed in the machine. This is a prop that Brain has made himself and is very effective. Joe was well received by the audience. A short break followed, with the ladies from the church serving tea and coffee with homemade buns. Stevie B then introduced Lauren Stringwell, or Mi Yung Tan, who performed her Chinese act. As usual, Lauren was superb and had the audience captivated. Well done Lauren. Geoff Robertshaw was the final act, assisted by Ange. Geoff started off with several productions to background music. Geoff had some great props, including a great Dice Box using a Rubik Cube. But the best trick of the day must have been the production of a large white rabbit from two doves. Nobody in the audience was expecting it, and gasps could be heard from the crowd. Congratulations to all performers in making a very enjoyable afternoon. Several members came to support including jean, Eric, Dennis and Gemma. Phil Howarth came along not only to support, but also to help out with building the stage area. |
