Secretarial | Now tonight was to be the competition night with a host of performers in the Close-up and Stage competitions. Sadly, there will only be a Close-up Competition and that too was nearly cancelled. I think it’s a real shame that we have such a strong large number of members who have absolutely no interest it would seem in performing. I know plenty can talk a good talk but for me talk is cheap. How about those who don’t like performing in competitions? Well, there are always the Roadshows. There are one or two members who refuse to compete and yet have helped the Circle tremendously on shows. Maybe you’re not really a performer and are just interested in it. This would certainly apply to collectors and historians etc. Okay how about being a reporter or technician? Maybe you could help as part of the stage crew? It could well be that there are those who feel they are not good enough yet to be involved in such things. Well I’m afraid they never will be then! There are, no doubt, others who just want to be members and contribute nothing more than their attendance and subscription. This has to be accepted. The bottom line, I guess is that there are and will always be in any group, magical or otherwise, those that do and those that don’t, yet still rely on the doers to keep costs down and make events happen. I know I couldn’t hold my head high as a member of Bradford Magic Circle, if I was nothing more than a statistic on a list. I guess this will have fallen on many deaf ears, or blind eyes seeing as it’s written, so I’ll step down off my soap - box. I’ll be back on it fairly soon though, no doubt as I’m sure none of the above problems will change. |
