I feel we have enjoyed another successful year with a strong Hey Presto Show that was well received by many members and non-members alike. The meetings in general had a good turnout and Ivan presented us with a wide variety of magic lectures once again. Congratulations must go to Melvyn for the success of the Dinner, much of which was down to his providing strong support from outside the membership. It is a concern of the committee that the Dinner was so poorly attended by the membership, particularly when you consider the lengths Melvyn and I in particularly went to, to make the evening a success. I hope Henry receives better support. My real concern with the lack of support for the Dinner, the Roadshows or other events in the Circle's calendar is the silence all too often received. I remember at the first BMC AGM I attended, the Secretary at the time, Phil Hansen, remarked that if the committee receive no feedback, be it good or bad, it can only assume that they are running the Circle in what the membership feels is the best interests of the Circle. The same still applies today. Those few who have raised concerns with the committee have always had their concerns addressed and been given a reply where necessary. Onto more positive things though. Thanks are expressed to those who helped in the shows and such evenings as the Questions Time meeting. I was very pleased with the show we put on when we visited the Leeds Magical Association. Those who don't take part in such events missed a wonderful evening. I look forward to their visit to our club in May. It was nice to see some of our younger members performing at the British Ring Convention, over in Southport. Darren, Lauren and Ross did themselves and magic proud. Well done to Darren as well for his successes at both Blackpool and the Young Magician of the Year competition. The same goes for Mark and Ross following our competition night. I must ask that we don't sit back and leave all the shows and competitions to the Darren's, Ross's, Lauren's, and Mark's of the Circle. Or for that matter the Ken's, Brian's and Steve Gore's. As well as narrowing the variety of magic the Circle can present to its audiences by using the 'same old faces' time and time again, it is also wholly unfair to rely upon those few to bail out such a large membership. The next year or so will be showing a change in the committee and of some of its officers. That's never a bad thing as change can bring in fresh ideas. The first of these is Victoria's decision to not seek re-election to committee. Thanks are expressed to Victoria for 6 years continued service on the committee. In closing, thanks are expressed to the committee for their support and guidance and to the members who continue to go out of their way for the Circle's benefit. Congratulations to Melvyn and Christine for a very successful and hopefully enjoyable (though at times stressfull) year as President and Lady and a hope of the same successes for Henry and Sarah as incoming President and Lady. Here's to a successful 2006/7. |
